Some Southern towns and cities combine historic charm with a backdrop of scenic nature views. We’ve created a list of some of these cities because they have so much to offer. Whether you enjoy shopping at quaint local shops, learning about historical events, or hiking and biking in the great outdoors, we’ve created this list of what to do and where to stay in these boutique escapes. 

Tuscumbia, Alabama 

What To Do: Tuscumbia is a charming historic city along the Tennessee River in Northern Alabama. With its walkable streets, downtown Tuscumbia is the perfect place for taking a stroll to shop for books, clothing, antiques, and home goods. Grab a bite to eat at any of the local restaurants or cafes. For a tasty treat, visit the Palace Ice Cream Shop, which is in what once was a pharmacy in the 1950s. With the sunny summer weather, you may consider going on an outdoor excursion. Stay cool and enjoy the fresh air in Tuscumbia’s Spring Park, which features a 51-foot fountain and cascading waterfall perfect for taking selfies. The park regularly hosts events and light shows by the fountain in the evenings. For the kids, the park has a miniature train ride and a splash pad. Visitors can tour the home, which has Helen Keller’s original furnishings and belongings. Other must-see attractions in the area include the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, featuring world-famous musicians from the state, and the Tennessee Valley Museum of Art, which has rotating exhibits throughout the year.  History buffs will enjoy visiting the Tuscumbia Railroad Depot and the Coldwater Stagecoach Stop. 

Where To Stay: Tuscumbia has a variety of places to stay, but two of them really stand out and showcase the history and beauty of the city. The first floor of the building contains the Big Bad Breakfast restaurant, which features custom-created meats, fresh biscuits and preserves, locally roasted coffee, and some of the best cocktails you will taste. In the basement of the Stricklin building is the upscale gaming space, The Boiler Room. Here, you can try your hand at any of the four vintage-style bowling lanes as well as the foosball table, Skee-Ball, shuffleboard, darts, and classic arcade games from the 80s and 90s.

Paris, Arkansas 

What To Do: Paris, Arkansas is a rural town located at the base of Mount Magazine in the Northwest part of the state. The downtown area is a thriving commercial district with a wide variety of antique shops, restaurants, and boutique shops, many of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. Be sure to visit the 25-foot Eiffel Tower, which sits on top of a seven-foot-tall water fountain base. A Farmer’s Market takes places on the town square every Tuesday and Saturday during the spring and summer. Enjoy the great outdoors at the highest elevation in Paris by hiking on Mount Magazine. The mountain offers stunning views and is the perfect destination for mountain biking, horseback riding, backpacking, and riding ATVs. Mount Magazine also has areas for technical rock climbing and is one of only two parks with hang gliding launch areas. Other park amenities include hiking trails, scenic overlooks, picnic areas, a pavilion, and a visitor center with a gift shop. 

Where To Stay: If you enjoy the beauty of nature, stay directly on the mountain at The Lodge at Mount Magazine. This resort mountain lodge has 60 rooms with breathtaking views of the Petit Jean River Valley and the Blue Mountain Lake in the distance. Monroe/West Monroe, Louisiana 

What To Do: Monroe-West Monroe is nestled on the banks of the Ouachita River and Bayou Desiard.  Go treasure hunting in Antique Alley or shop until you drop at northern Louisiana’s largest shopping mall. The food here can’t be beat and there are over 100 locally-owned restaurants serving everything from po’boys and catfish to sushi and enchiladas. Have a refreshing drink at one of the local breweries or vineyards, or enjoy a five cent Coca-Cola at the Biedenharn Museum and Gardens. The museum is the home of Joseph Biedenharn, the first bottler of Coca-Cola. After touring the home, stroll through the EL Song Gardens. The gardens feature over an acre of terraces, fountains, floral plantings, and statues, all interlaced amid French ironwork, boxwood walkways, and gorgeous blooms surrounding by an English-style brick wall. There’s an abundance of nature recreation areas in Monroe-West Monroe, and you can get some fresh air by visiting hardwood forests, wildlife refuges, and swamps on scenic hiking trails.

Saint Joseph, Missouri 

What To Do: Downtown Saint Joseph, Missouri, has plenty to see and do, so there is never a dull moment! Where To Stay: The Whiskey Inn has a storied history and is a popular place to stay in Saint Joseph. The mansion was built by Ferdinand and Sarah Westheimer, who immigrated to the United States from Germany and invested in bourbon distilleries throughout Kentucky. A devastating fire ravaged the home in 1995, but it was carefully restored to its former glory into the cozy bed and breakfast that it is today. The rooms are decorated with opulent period furniture, and modern touches like private bathrooms and air conditioning were discreetly added to preserve the home’s original character. The Shakespeare Chateau Inn and Gardens is another historic mansion that is a popular destination for travelers.
