Savoring South Carolina

Known for its storied past, marshy coastlines, and down-home cooking, South Carolina is a dream to be discovered. Bask in the foliage of the foothills through South Carolina’s Upcountry, sip warmed spiced cider in the Lowcountry and enjoy an exciting night out in the Olde English District.

Because in South Carolina, there is a little something for everyone.

Upland Living in the Upcountry

Gold, ruby and amber colored leaves dapple the scenic winding roadways as stunning landscapes and spectacular mountain vistas appear around each curve.  Steeped in history, Carolina’s Upcountry charms each visitor to the hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Northwest South Carolina.

On the third Saturday of the month, visit the Hagood Mill Historic Site in Pickens and see the 175-year old Mill run and purchase grits and flours ground on-site at the mercantile gift shop. The historic location is the home to the Native Roots Interpretive Trail, a new installment following a bygone trading path used by the region’s indigenous people. On the trail visitors discover over 30 ancient carvings in the large stone boulders at the Hagood Creek Petroglyph Site.

A trip to the Ram Cat Alley Historic District is a wonderful way to spend the day. Listed on the National Historic Registry, the District consists of 18 brick and mortar warehouses and buildings now home to cafes, shops, studios, and more. A stroll through the area is a fun-filled afternoon of sights, sounds and most importantly, shopping.

Located in a former textile warehouse, the Hare and Hound in Oconee serves up classic pub staples like Fish and Chips and Guinness Steak Pies, as well as Southern supper specialties like a Pork Chops topped with homemade Pimento Cheese or a Pecan Crusted Mountain Trout.

In Liberty, spend the evening people relaxing on the screened porch of the Liberty House Inn. The Bed and Breakfast Inn’s original heart pine wood floors are charmingly accented with one of a kind antiques while enormous bedrooms boast supple linens and soothing paint colors. Enjoy Southern flair with modern amenities with a gourmet breakfast, complimentary Wi-fi and board games in the parlor.

For those seeking a more understated yet refined stay, nestle in for the night at Hotel Domestique in Travelers Rest. Inspired by the travels of legendary cyclist George Hincapie, this relaxed getaway features exposed stone walls accented with warm rustic hardwoods. With bright airy windows, modern artwork and designer linens, the well-appointed guestrooms offer an elegant yet simple aesthetic. The boutique hotel wows visitors with its astounding views of the Blue Ridge Mountains – a spectacular sight in every season. visitoconee.com

Distinctly Olde English

Full of smiling faces and friendly locals, the Olde English District of South Carolina is home to family-owned boutique hotels, important historical landmarks, and magnificent murals. No matter the product — when it comes to Olde English craftsmanship – quality, tradition and connection are what counts.

York County’s colorful and eclectic Mural Trail is a perfect representation of the diverse population of the region and makes for an excellent backdrop through America’s Palmetto State. A stop in the county’s largest city — Rock Hill — is a day well spent in the Olde English District. For brunch, enjoy the libations and lavish cuisine at the Fish Market Grill – where mimosas and crab cakes Benedict provide the perfect fuel for an adventure in town.

The Mercantile — Rock Hill’s homegrown answer to Anthropologie — offers customers an eclectic array of home goods, elegant clothing, and luxurious bath and body products. Available in store and online, local art lines the walls of this Warehouse on White business. The Mercantile is also home to one of Rock Hill’s last florists — The Flower Bar — where pre-made bouquets, pick-and-choose stems, or custom arrangements are artfully crafted - because flowers make everyday a special day.

The newly renovated East Main Guesthouse, a historic Bed and Breakfast Inn in the heart of Rock Hill, is a great place to catch some z’s. Conveniently located within walking distance to the city’s most popular destinations, the Inn’s rooms are spacious and refined, with modern fixtures and antique accents.

Travel the YoCo Brew Trail and stop in for a delightful craft beer at Amor Artis Brewing company located on Main Street in Rock Hill. Focusing on love rather than IBUs, the brother-run company showcases the importance of family, following one’s dreams, and creating a truly outstanding product. Or visit the only winery in York County, Cat’s Paw Winery, and taste some true small batch, craftsman style wines while playing with the owner’s cat, Percy. With 18 varieties ranging from Watermelon Bliss to the “Purrr-fect Chilean Merlot” to a delicate Valpolicella, the winery is bold and daring with its creations, while providing excellence in customer service.

Head south to Camden and deepen one’s appreciation for the fascinating history of the region at the Historic Camden Foundation. Sitting atop vast acreage, the fortified 18th century buildings and the recently renovated home of the city’s founder, Joseph Kershaw, the estate imparts the sense of colonial life in Camden during the Revolutionary War.

A short drive away, spend the night at the Bloomsbury Inn, a welcoming Bed and Breakfast. This beautifully restored home features large elegant guestrooms each with a fireplace to keep warm on the coldest of winter nights. First class accommodations and gourmet breakfasts in a registered historic home demonstrate true Southern hospitality.

Scout Southern Market is the embodiment of refined Southern coastal living — with a side of sweet tea. And the Rustic Pup has every fashionable accessory for that stylish furry family member.

Swing by the Carolina Cider Company in Yemassee for cinnamon spiced apple cider and local gifts and find the perfect book at the Edisto Island Bookstore. Freshen up the wardrobe with a stop into Hilton Head’s Shelter Cove Towne Center’s Birdie James for some authentically chic fashion finds.

Visit the Black Dog Grill for internationally inspired indulgence made with locally sourced products to create the best Lowcountry cuisine in the area. The elegant steak house features hand cut steaks and poultry, paired with fine wines and fresh produce, creating a great memory and a perfect meal.
